Dark Web Monitoring

Do you know if your data is out there?

What is the Dark Web?

The dark web is a hidden part of the internet that is not indexed by traditional search engines like Google or Bing. It’s accessible only through special software, such as Tor (The Onion Router), which allows users to browse anonymously.

Why is it a risk?

This area of the internet is used by criminals to access information and to liaise with other like-minded people. They share ideas, purchase data, buy criminal tools (e.g. ransomware) and basically access information that would normally be banned and unavailable.

If your data is available on the Dark Web it could be used for a number of malicious purposes including identity theft, unathorised access (via compromised credentials) or future social engineering attacks.

What does our solution do?

We partner with Breachaware, who provide an industry leading dark web monitoring solution.

Scans for Your Domain

The solution scans the Dark Web for any user information (i.e. personal data) associated with the organisations domain e.g. mycompany.com.

The solution scans for historical breaches and new breaches associated with the domain.

Checks for Third-Party Breaches

The solution is designed to monitor all third party-data breaches where user data has been released onto the Dark Web.

For example: A user has accessed a travel website and used their company email address as part of their interaction with the website.  Perhaps this is a website that requires users to log in to see their itinerary etc.

If that website suffers a data breach, then the users work credentials are exposed.  That email address may also be accompanied by a password as part of the breach. The user could have used their same password that they have at work.

In the above scenario, their work username and password is now exposed on the Dark Web.

Breach Notification

The solution notifies us (and yourselves with the Premium version) that a breach has occurred.  You can also look into the dashboard and assess other data breaches that may have occurred in the recent past i.e. the last 12 years.

Breach Interrogation

Organisations can interrogate the data with our Premium and Enhanced subscriptions.

This means that they can assess which user account has been compromised, when that occurred and what data is now on the Dark Web.

This then allows for an informed decision to be made with regards to the remedial actions needed to reduce the risk.

Data Breach

Why is monitoring a good idea?

It is vital to know if your data has been exposed.  You cannot predict what may happen to that data but you can at least make an informed decision about any actions that can be taken to minimise the risk of the breach.

If user credentials are involved, the minimum action is to consider password changes. The impacted individuals can also make an informed estimation of their identity theft risk exposure.
